Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists can work independently or in larger teams specialising in different areas

of health and medical care. They work in the National Health Service (NHS), in primary and secondary care and in specialist centres. They also work in the private and voluntary sector, in education and in private industry. Physiotherapists may be accessed directly or following referral from a doctor or other health care professional.

A physical therapist will initially conduct a subjective examination of a patient's medical history, and then go on to the objective assessment. The subjective examination is guided by the presenting system and complaint, and the objective assessment is in turn guided by the history. This semistructured process is used to rule out serious pathology, establish functional limitations, establish the diagnosis, guide therapy, and establish a baseline for monitoring progress.
